Silly Sunday Snapshots: Mary and Max (2009)

I know it’s not Monday Movies yet, but I have to share the silliness with you.

Life is… odd. People are odder. I know this because I saw a very odd movie yesterday. When I watched the trailer last week, I thought it would be super funny. I was close…

See for yourself before you keep reading:

In my book, a line such as ‘P.S. Did you know that turtles can breathe through their anuses?’ is the birth-child of a genius (or a savant, which is almost the same). It’s every freak’s dream to hear that in a movie. I imagined the whole film would be full of such gems.

But before you go off to watch this with the family, STOP!!!!! This is NOT a children’s movie. This is a very quirky view of the world through the eyes of a man with Asperger’s syndrome and through the eyes of a lonely little girl. If you ask me, the friendship of Max and Mary is as brilliant as it gets.

On the other hand, we learn quite a lot about life that not everyone would relay in an animated movie. So below, I’ll try to show you what I mean in the form of screenshots.

Meet Mary Daisy Dinkle. She's from Australia.

Her Mom likes to 'taste' Sherry and 'borrow' items from the market.

Mary is in love with her next door neighbour.

But she has no friends. Not yet anyway.

Enter Max Horrowitz. He's from USA and likes chocolate hot-dogs.

He has Asperger's syndrome and a one-eyed cat.

One day Mary decides to write Max and ask him about babies.
(Apparently, they come from eggs hatched by priests and prostitutes.)

Faced with a stressful situation, Max suffers an anxiety attack.
(You see, people confuse him by acting contrary to their beliefs.)

The scary horny lady from his Overeaters group doesn't help matters.
(I think Max found solace in food, which came in handy when he found a tasting job.)

Even his fish starts to smoke under pressure...
(There is no excuse for flushing cigarette buts in the toilet!)

Max and Mary start to dream of meeting.
(And when they finally do, it's nothing either of them imagined.)

^^Their friendship teaches them an important lesson^^
(... before you can hope to have friends...)

Those are the basics. If you’d like to learn more, you’d have to see the movie. I won’t say this is the most brilliant movie on the Planet. I won’t even say it’s super-funny. But I did see something unique about it and that was its honesty. And the fact that it’s completely bonkers. Whoever came up with it was probably high... or wait, didn't they say it was a true story? Omg, how crazy IS life?!

How do YOU see the world? Have you ever exchanged letters with anyone? What did you learn from that person (those people)?

Cool. I'm glad I was of service.

That's interesting. I knew one guy, but he told me it lessened when he was drunk, which I thought was weird.. Enjoy it! :)

I have exchanged letters (emails) with many people. I have learned somethings from them. Like friendship takes time and attention. True friends stick through your hard times. And of course - don't take yourself to seriously :)

All good things, Krista. Thanks for sharing! :)
